Why we developed Zitzi Delfi

We all know that a lot happens when children are developing. Already, before the child’s first birthday, an astonishing amount of things have happened, that forms the basis for further development. This is usually the age when it is normally discovered that something is wrong with the child’s development.

From the time of birth, the child may slowly develop increased trunk control. We also see flexion patterns becomes less obvious. At the age of 6 months, the child may begin to elicit head control in an upright position, as well as the upper body actively following when the child is pulled (by the hands) to a sitting position (from a supine position). The newborn reflexes gradually disappear and at the age of 5 months, and the moro reflex should be gone. The asymmetrical tonic neck reflex usually appears more or less and disappears altogether when the child becomes approximately 6 months old.

When it comes to learning how to sit, several of the motorical preconditions develop from birth to typically one year of age. Possibilities for sitting stability is usually created at the age of 6-7 months. Around the age of 6 month, reflexes for arm protection laterally are developed. The Parachute reflex for catching falls forward also gradually develops. During the child’s initial stage of development, the child sits with a curved back until it reaches an age of approximately 8 months. At that age, the child’s sitting position becomes straighter, trying to find its balance and center of gravity. This is also the age when children generally manage to sit up.

If this does not happen, and the child does not develop at the proper speed, it is extremely important that we observe it as quickly as possible in order to attend to the child’s developmental needs. The development of a person’s progress occurs in a step by step, predetermined order. If one of those steps is lacking, the development cannot continue according to schedule. However, if we receive help to compensate for the steps that the body didn’t manage to make, it is possible to progress in a more normal manner than otherwise.

In our daily work we meet a lot of disabled individuals that never had a chance to continue to develop. People that never had a chance of finding alternative routes because proper support was not provided in time. One often wonders how a person’s life might have improved had help been available sooner. There are numerous factors that come into play in preventing a disability from progressing. Using equipment that facilitates normal development can help us reduce the levels of disabilities that exist in our society today. It is necessary to utilize all of the available help and the knowledge that exists to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

In order to help these children and their parents, we at Anatomic SITT AB have developed a system for sitting. The systems target age group is from 8 month to 10 years old. Zitzi Delfi is a chair that helps to support the child where it is needed. It enhances the child and allows the child to use his or her own active ability to move. Zitzi Delfi is a chair to grow in, and provides the optimum amount of support. A child in a Zitzi Delfi is given a chance to learn new things instead of concentrating on what he or she can’t do!
